Dismissed — Assault (domestic) — Police ReportClient: Kevin G., Accused Police Report: On the 15th of November 2002, Constable C**** and Constable B**** attended 1** Wellesley Drive in Pickering to investigate a domestics assault. Officers spoke with the victim, Natalie C., who reported that she was assaulted by her common-law husband, Kevin G., last night. The victim reported that her and her husband were in bed last night at approximately 11:10 p.m. and that he had gone to sleep. She reported that she got her husband’s permission to read in bed and was still awake trying to read in bed when he suddenly awoke and became angry that she was reading. She reported that he got out of bed and picked up a halogen floor lamp from the foot of the bed and swung it at her. The victim reported that she was hit on the right knee by the lamp, causing a small bruise on her right knee. Constable C**** observed a small bruise the size of a dime on her right knee. The victim added that Mr. G. threatened to kill her saying something like: "I’m going to kill you one day, I’m going to kill you, I’m going to kill you, you don’t listen to me." The victim then reported that her husband realized what he had just did and turned around and redirected his frustration on the exercise equipment in the room by throwing it around. The victim reported that she stayed in bed and covered herself under the blankets and did not call the police because she was scared about what he would do. The victim was upset and crying while speaking with the officers. She added that once he calmed down he went to sleep and that she left and went to sleep in another bedroom. Mr. G. had no further contact with the victim the remainder of the night and left for work early the next morning. Natalie C. advised that they had been in a common-law relationship for 6 years and have lived at the residence for 4 years. They have no children together. She reported that this is the first incidence of domestic violence that she has reported to the police, but added that similar incidents have been going on for the past 1 1/2 years to 2 years. She reported that he verbally abuses her, calling her names, and has damaged their personal property in the home when he gets upset. She also reported that he has threatened to kill her in the past and has threatened to commit suicide. She suspects that he works too much and that the stress is what causes his behaviour. The victim is concerned for her safety and is unsure what Mr. G. is capable of if he is arrested or if she leaves him. The victim also advised that she can no longer cope with the relationship and has decided to leave the relationship. Mr. G. was not home at the time police attended the residence. The victim attended 19 Division to do a video statement. Constable B**** remained at the home to arrest Mr. G. if he returned home. Officers re-attended the residence several times; however, Mr. G. was not yet home from work. Constable C**** and Constable R**** attended the residence at 1:21 a.m. on the 16th of November 2002 and knocked on the door. A male answered the door and identified himself as Kevin G. He invited the Officers into the residence to speak with him. He was advised of the report filed by his wife and placed under arrest at 1:27 a.m. He was allowed to change into more comfortable clothing, cuffed, searched, and placed into the rear of the police vehicle. He was advised of his rights to counsel and cautioned at 1:38 a.m. He indicated he understood, saying "yes," and accepted the offer to speak to duty counsel. The Accused was transported to 19 Division at 1:39 a.m. Transport was completed at 1:47 a.m. The Accused was placed in interview room number 4 and thoroughly searched. Duty counsel was called at 1:55 a.m. Duty counsel, Mr. F****, returned the call at 2:00 a.m. and spoke with the Accused from 2:03 a.m. to 2:11 a.m. The Accused was processed for a bail hearing and transported to 17 Division by Constable R****. A copy of the report was faxed to Victims of Crime. |
