Carmen's Case — Narcotic Conspiracy — Police Report

Client:  Carmen R., Accused
Complainant:  Toronto Police Service
Charge and Arrest Warrant:  Conspiracy to Traffic in Narcotic

Police Report:  Carmen is the girlfriend of Smith Vanner. Through surveillance and telephone interceptions, it was evident that Carmen was not only aware of Smith’s drug dealing but was actually supporting him in doing so. On numerous occasions, when the two had heated domestic arguments, Carmen would call Smith and his friends drug dealers.

On March 27th, 2008, Smith told Carmen over the phone that he was stopped by the police and that they found nothing. Smith utilizes a very sophisticated hydraulic storage compartment in his vehicles that are undetectable by the Police. At this time, Carmen became concerned and told Smith to go to her house and "get that bag out of here." Shortly thereafter, Smith and Carmen were observed leaving Carmen’s apartment and Smith was carrying a large bag. Officers observed Smith spend time in the rear of his trunk and place that bag inside the trunk of the car.

A short time later, Smith and Carmen left the vehicle unattended. At this time, officers entered the vehicle acting under the authority of a pre-authorized search warrant. At this time, the officers found an empty bag in the trunk. However, it was clear that there was a hidden compartment in the rear trunk area of the vehicle. Officers could not access this area without causing damage so it was left undisturbed.
